What is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an advanced practice health care provider who specializes in human lactation.
IBCLC’s assist families with breastfeeding and
nutrition issues from pregnancy throughout the duration of
breastfeeding. Lactation consultants can help monitor infant
growth, collaborate with primary care providers about health
conditions and medications, assist with breastfeeding problems,
and help mothers dicontinue breastfeeding as needed.
There are many pathways to become an IBCLC. For health
care providers with a medical related degree, applicants must
complete more than 2,000 hours of one-on-one breastfeeding
support, 45 credit hours of education in lactation,
and pass the international certification exam.
IBCLC’s work in a variety of settings from hospitals
to private practice.
